Maitreya

Maitreya (Sanskrit), Metteyya (Pali), is regarded as a future Buddha of this world in Buddhist eschatology. In some Buddhist literature, such as the Amitabha Sutra and the Lotus Sutra, he is referred to as Ajita.”

According to Buddhist belief, the Maitreya will be the final coming of Buddah, here to teach a new Dharma (law) after the old laws have lost their relevance in an ever evolving world. He has since been adopted by several groups, using the concept as a way to further bolster their own religious importance. For example, some Muslims believe that Mohammad was the Maitreya, while some members of the Bahai faith believe their prophet, Baha’u’llah’, was Maitreya. Others theorize the Antichrist may attempt to pose at Maitreya, as both figures who are poised to influence the masses of people with a brand of “enlightenment”.
